Jesse James - Cole Younger Gang Artifacts
Description: Included period horse court, top hat of extra quality custom made in New York. I.X. L. X. L. Spokane Falls. Quality beaver top hat of the period. Three handwritten letters on Waseca leader stationary dated August, September and October 1876, and a bismark extra daily tribune July 6, 1876, first account of the Custer massacre with a listing of all that were killed. "On September 7, 1876, the First National Bank of Northfield, Minnesota was robbed by the Jesse James - Cole Younger gang. History now refers to this famous event as The Great Northfield Raid. Thirty miles away Will Kennedy was writing for the Waseca Leader, the local newspaper. The paper issued extras every day and Mr. Kennedy said he stood guard watching for the robbers. Shortly after the robbery, Mr. Kennedy says in a letter to his sister that he would soon be moving on to Washington territory. This he did, as these letters and artifacts were found in the attic of a home purchased by attorney Mike Heanovich in the early 1970s. He then gave the items to Martin Hendrickson of Garfield, Wa.
