Field & Staff Sword from Cincinnati, OHIO

Here we present an antique U.S. Model of 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword, made by Pettibone Brothers Mfg. Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The model 1860 was produced from the period of the American Civil War through the time of the Spanish-American War. The overall length is 38-3/4 inches and the nicely etched blade measures 32 inches along with a gilt brass hilt, wire wrapped rayskin grip, and a steel scabbard.

This sword has a rare whistle quillon feature. The stem of the quillon is quite literally a whistle. Another interesting feature is the folding guard. This folds and locks securely into place with a spring-loaded button. The blade is very nicely etched with an array of U.S. themed symbology and scrollwork. The handle is the original rayskin, bound in braided wire.

The overall condition is fine. This example sports a beautifully etched, bright finished blade with American symbolism. The hilt is solid all the way around. The twisted wire wrap remains tight around the rayskin. All brass hardware has been cast, even on the scabbard! A must have Officers Sword for the Civil War collection.
