Scarce Circa 1840 Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Hat Plate
Description: In 1840, as part of the process of reorganizing its militia forces into a more efficient force, Massachusetts renamed its militia the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. Insignia and buttons were changed at that time to include that name change. This hat insignia incorporates both that name change and the arm and sword crest of the Massachusetts State Seal. Pictured in figures 663 and 664 of "American Military Headgear Insignia" by J. Duncan Campbell and Michael J. O'Donnell, this style insignia is sometimes found on the "tar bucket" style shakos popular during that time frame. However, as also shown in one of the photos I posted, it also used on the 1842 chapeau of the Independent Corps of Cadets that I have in my collection. Measuring about 3 3/4" by 4 1/4", this insignia could be attached with either wire that had been soldered on the back or sewn to the hat with holes in the emblem. This one does have solder on the back where it looks like wires may have been removed and has 2 holes where it may have been sewn for attachment. The insignia on my ICC chapeau also is sewn on. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return postage. Shipping cost $15.00 for Priority Mail, insured. If you buy multiple items, I will combine shipping to save you money. SOLD |
