ORIGINAL CAMEL CORPS EXPERIMENT USED THIS BELL 1855-1866
Description: This is a very rare ,original US Army-issued camel Bell . These bells. were used during the little -known CAMEL CORPS, experiment from 1855 to 1866, when 71 Egyptian camels were purchased to patrol the deserts of the Southwest, and haul supplies ,between Texas and California. The brass bell is excellent+ condition, has a nice drak patina inside and out. The mouth of the bell at the widest is almost 5 inches and the hight is just under 5 inches. It has the original brass top for the strap th fit through .very strong. The clapped is is good shape attached well, has some surface rust as to be expected in an item of this age ,but effect nothing. This has the raised designs of three Federal eagles , stars ,sunburrsts, ect. The ring is amazing. This bell is identical to the one in the FORT TEJON MUSEUM,in Southern California , where camels were posted.Original camel barns are still standing at BENICIA Army barracks , near San Francisco. This is an Army Transportation MUSEUM which shows a photo of a camel bell and gives a history of the camel experiment . The use of camels was suggested by then ,SECRETARY OF THE ARMY ,JEFFERSON DAVIS. Call 859-533-5445 Dan SOLD |
