Model 1833 Ames Dragoon Saber w/ Scabbard, Dated 1835, Nice Blade and Markings
Description: Very nice Ames Model 1833 Dragoon Saber, dated 1835, with original scabbard. These sabers are much less common than Model 1840 and Model 1860 sabers, as the Federal Government only contracted for 6100 of them. (In contrast, Ames made over 74,000 Model 1860 sabers.) It is difficult to find these Model 1833’s in nice shape as the etching was very light and easily worn away. All etching and markings on this one are visible. As appropriate for an early Model 1833, this saber has the earlier lighter scabbard with narrow band wings. Due to complaints about these early scabbards being easily damaged, later years had a heavier scabbard. Despite having a number of smaller dents, the saber easily slides in and out of scabbard. Also appropriate for an earlier Model 1833 saber, the Federal inspector and ordnance marks are found on the reverse of the guard near the grip, as opposed to the quillon disk. Matching Ordnance markings on hilt and drag. Often the markings on the scabbard drag cannot be seen because of rust or wear. As commonly found on these sabers, it appears that at some point it was arsenal repaired and the hilt rewrapped with the style wire used on Model 1840 sabers. The original thin tightly coiled dragoon wire was easily broken. The leather wrap has had some wear since then, which some more recent owner has attempted to touch up with brown paint or stain. Also at some point the split rings on the scabbard were replaced with solid style rings found on later scabbards. The saber and scabbard still present extremely well, but I just try to point out any and all defects so there are no surprises. This saber was purchased several years ago from the well-known dealer and CW expert Harry Ridgeway, the Civil War Relicman, at a much higher price than it is being listed here. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return postage. Shipping cost $45.00 towards Priority Mail with insurance. SOLD |
