Brass Stencil for Massachusetts Civil War Soldier
Description: Offered here is a Civil War soldier’s stencil belonging to James W. Fitts, 18th Company Massachusetts Heavy Artillery (later identified as Company B, 4th Massachusetts Heavy Artillery). On August 31, 1862, Fitts, from Methuen MA, at age 29 mustered into the service of Company I, Sixth Regiment Massachusetts Infantry. The Sixth Massachusetts was the first 9 month regiment to answer the government’s call for service, and served doing garrison and picket duty in the Suffolk Virginia area from September 1862 through May 1863, as well as taking part in reconnaissance expeditions into the Blackwater River (boundary area between the Union occupied southeastern Virginia and the Confederate held interior). The Regiment lost 5 killed and 7 wounded at the Battle of Deserted House and were present at Longstreet’s Siege of Suffolk. They took about 80 Confederate stragglers prisoner pursuing Longstreet as he retreated, and lost another 5 men killed or mortally wounded, 12 wounded, and 5 taken prisoner at the Battle of Carrsville before returning to Boston and mustering out June 3, 1863. In late summer 1864 Massachusetts raised 14 companies of Heavy Artillery for the purpose of defending the state’s coastline and islands. These companies, numbered through 17 through 30, were to be “unattached”, not part of a regiment, and to be sent to various locations in the state for a one-year term. In August 1864, Fitts mustered into the 18th Unattached Company, receiving a bounty of $199.99 for his enlistment. In September 1864, these companies were instead ordered to Washington D.C. for garrison duty surrounding the Capitol, replacing the more experienced troops that had been manning the forts so that those troops could be sent to General Grant to serve as infantry in the advance towards Richmond. On November 12, 1864, an order from the War Department consolidated 12 of the unattached companies (17 through 28) into one regiment, the 4th Regiment Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. The 18th Unattached Company became Company B of the 4th Regiment Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. Fitts likely had this stencil made between the time he joined in August and the renaming of his company in November. The Regiment remained on duty in the forts surrounding Washington for the remainder of the war, mustering out in June 1865. This is a nice-looking stencil for a soldier who served 2 terms of service from 1862 to 1865, I think it is an honor to be the caretaker of an item that we can identify to a specific Civil War soldier. Please take a look at all the photos as they provide the best description of condition. Shipping to the lower 48 contiguous states. Shipping charge $15 towards cost of Priority Mail with full insurance. Three day return privilege, buyer pays return shipping. SOLD |
