Medea Corporation M3A1 Full Auto Sub Machine Gun - Silencer .45 ACP NFA
Description: M3A1 Full Auto Sub Machine Gun - Suppressed Barrel The Medea Corporation manufactured a few M3A1s during the early 1980s. These new M3A1s were assembled from a small number of Ithaca-manufactured M3A1 receiver halves. Medea employees welded the receiver halves together and installed genuine New-Old-Stock M3A1 parts into them. Unsubstantiated reports have stated the Medea M3A1s were manufactured at the request of the CIA for covert use in South America and perhaps in Iran. These were then marked "Medea Corporation", stamped with a serial number and placed on the BATF registry. Only a small number of Medea Corporation "Grease Guns" were made, the exact number is unknown. The M3 is an American .45-caliber submachine gun adopted by the U.S. Army. The M3 was chambered for the same .45 ACP round fired by the Thompson submachine gun, but was cheaper to mass produce and lighter. The M3 was commonly referred to as the "Grease Gun" or the "Greaser", owing to its visual similarity to the mechanic's tool. The M3 was intended as a replacement for the Thompson, and began to enter frontline service in mid-1944. The M3A1 variant was used in the Korean War and later conflicts. The M3 at 7.95 pounds is lighter than the 10 pound Thompson. The M3A1 has a fire rate of 450 rounds per minute. M3A1 "grease Gun" is immediately recognizable as different from the M3 model by the lack of a lever to cock the bolt. Also distinguishable from the left side of the M3 model due to the M3A1 protective sheet metal "box" around the magazine release designed to prevent inadvetent release of the magazine. On the M3A1, the bolt is cocked by the firer opening the cover over the ejection port and pulling the bolt back using a deep recess in the front of the bolt. When the cover is closed, whether the bolt is cocked, or forward, a catch inside the ejection port cover holds the bolt in-place for safety. The cover must be open for the gun to fire, which it does from an open bolt position.
