War of 1812 Era U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Musket Dated 1809/1810 with "B.S.E" Branded in the Stock

Description:
The Springfield Model 1795 musket is important as the very first standardized primary U.S. military shoulder arm to be manufactured on the new nation's soil, and was influenced by the French Charleville Model 1766 pattern muskets. It was produced between 1795-1815 at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts, and also at the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia.

This example is dated 1809 on the U.S. Springfield lock with the visible federal eagle, with a faintly legible 1810 date on the buttplate, and was likely assembled this way with the differing dates. A 1795 musket from this time period is a prime specimen to have seen active use during the War of 1812. A period militia type branded marking "B.S.E" is located on the left of the buttstock, and a lighter marking "BS" is on the right of the buttstock. Further research is certainly warranted.

The top of the breech has the "P/eagle head/V" proofs showing. The smoothbore barrel measures at 42 inches, likely shortened during its period of use from its standard 44-45 inch length, as was common. There are some glued repaired cracks visible around the breech and one missing small section directly behind the barrel tang, with the stock remaining otherwise sound. The lock functions fine, with half and full cocks, and proper trigger release and mainspring.

If this musket could talk, it would certainly have stories to tell. As a required model for any early U.S. military shoulder arms collection, this Springfield 1795 musket would proudly fill the spot.
