It’s chambered in 11mm same caliber as the later first modern Gras cartridge. Manufactured in 1871 in the Imperial factory of Ste Étienne, with all the military approval markings. Scarcely found in such excellent condition, with a 32.1/2" barrel with excellent bore with sharp rifling. Serial numbers are all matching on the barrel, bolt & wood rare enough to be mentioned except for the cleaning rod. It could come if you like for an extra $110 with its rare saber yatagan sharpened saber bayonet (Mamufacture Imperiale St Étienne 1874) without scabbard. Wood with the usual battle scarces & gun rack, the round markings on the right side of the stock with in the middle with its round dovel which was removed by one of the "Communard" of revolution/ insurgency of 1870/71 in Siege Paris occupied inside by "La Commune" and ouside by the . The metal has an old reblue which turned to brown patina minor marks, all is accurately photographed. The action is firm, smooth and in good working condition. All other Chassepot rifles were later in 1874 irremediatly modified to shoot the modern black powder Gras cartridge then named the model 1866 modified 74. Those Chassepot took an active part, with success in the 1870 War against Prussia & the following civil war in Paris of 1871 where the "Commune" the communards insurgency were crushed by the legitimist goverment troup of Versailles (15 kilometers away where the goverment was sieging) Ragging battles, sommery executions made over 350.000 victims in a 9 months period when famish parisians eat cats and dogs... Those are fun to shoot and very accurate with its 32.5" long barrel with black powder needle loads showing original packs on the pictures, an original needle & illustrations are not for sale.
