LIEGE PROOFED Antique Home “BOOBY TRAP” .72 Cal. PINFIRE Belgian Trap Gun
Made Circa 1860s
Description: LIEGE PROOFED Antique Home “BOOBY TRAP” .72 Cal. PINFIRE Belgian Trap Gun Made Circa 1860s Here we present an antique Liege Proofed Pinfire Trap Gun, made circa the 1860s in Liege, Belgium. A booby trap is a device or setup, in this case, a gun, that was intended to shoot someone who was entering into someone’s home or business in the 1860s-70. It was triggered by the presence or actions of the individual and sometimes had some form of bait designed to lure the person towards it. The trap would likely have been set to act upon trespassers that enter into someone’s home or business back in the tumultuous times of the mid to late 1800s in Europe. It was usually set off by opening a door or window. Today in modern day, the usage of this type of device is considered against the law. In 1971, there was a court case decided by the Iowa Supreme Court, in which two homeowners were held liable for battery for injuries caused to a trespasser who set off a spring gun set as a mantrap in an abandoned house on the homeowners' property. The case thereafter received wide attention in legal circles, becoming a stapleof tort law casebooks and law school courses. But, in the mid to late 1800s, this type of “Trap Gun” was used quite frequently as a deterrent to ne’er do wells! The overall condition is good. The bore is in good shape for its age. The trap functions. Liege proofed barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 4-3/8 inches. Caliber: .72 Pinfire Overall condition as seen in photos.
