Cunningham & Cogan New Bedford Mass Bomb Lance Whaling Shoulder Gun *RARE* 1877 Patent 23 lbs Maritime Relic
Description: *SALE PENDING* Very Rare Cunningham & Cogan, New Bedford, Massachusetts Breechloading Bomb Lance Whaling Shoulder Gun, 4 Ga, mfg. circa late 1870's. The all-iron Cunningham & Cogan whaling gun was manufactured in New Bedford only for a brief period of a couple years during the late 1870's by Patrick Cunningham and Bernard Cogan on the 1877 patent developed by H. W. Chapman. The guns were marketed in New Bedford by William Lewis who shortly after developed his own revised version of the gun which featured a bronze breech and brass barrel. The William Lewis guns were manufactured in greater numbers than the original Cunningham & Cogan and were also designed with a 7/8" bore to accommodate the standard size bomb lance of the day whereas this earlier all-iron gun featured a 1" bore that fired Cunningham's own 1875 patent combined bomb lance & cartridge. Both the Cunningham & Cogan and William Lewis guns proved to be very popular aboard steam barks in the Arctic and saw continued use well into the early 20th century. This example has certainly been around the world a few times and appears to have been retired after a misfire that left a portion of the bomb lance stuck in the barrel protruding from the muzzle. I suspect the missing breech broken at the hinge and damaged action were caused by the blowback. The hammer and trigger still freely move but there is no mainspring tension. Otherwise the gun is complete with solid cast frame and skeleton stock and threaded steel barrel. The iron surfaces are naturally rusty from having spent years at sea. Weight is a staggering 23 lbs. These do not turn up often and when they do are almost invariably the later iron & brass William Lewis version. A fantastic piece of maritime history that speaks to you of old whalers and baymen long past.
