American Stocked 1741 Tower Long Land Pattern 1st Model Brown Bess Flintlock Musket French & Indian / Revolutionary War RARE
Description: Very Rare American Restocked Pattern 1730/40 Long Land (First Model) Brown Bess Flintlock Infantry Musket, .80 cal smoothbore, mfg. 1741. Long Land Brown Bess muskets of any pattern are extremely scarce and examples this early which show American usage typically indicate they were issued to Provincial troops in British North America during the French & Indian War and left behind with the colonial militias after the conflict ended only to fight in patriot hands throughout the Revolutionary War. The barrel measures 45 ¾" long retaining it's original bayonet lug with sighting notch cut into the tang in typical American fashion. Breech is stamped “WC” below a faint number with “C” over “4” marked just under the muzzle. Early “banana” style lock is clearly marked “TOWER / 1741” at the tail with Crown over “GR” and ordnance broad arrow. The lock remains in it's original unaltered form with all original components and shows remnants of a blackened finish mostly thinned to plum/gray. The barrel has a smooth dark salt & pepper patina. The stock has a rich cherry color with prominent diamond relief carving around the sideplate, lock, and barrel tang and “W. F. KEEN” stamped on both sides of the butt and again twice faintly on the buttplate itself. This could be the name of the gunsmith who restocked and rebuilt the gun or it very well may be the name of the soldier who carried it in the Revolution. In my opinion the stock dates post-Revolution which would suggest it either saw continued militia use or it was restocked simply to be preserved as an heirloom for the family of the old patriot veteran who carried it. The wood has a pleasing worn appearance overall with just one small surface chip behind the lock. Original brass buttplate, triggerguard (cracked/repaired), convex sideplate, and ramrod pipes all have an attractive goldenrod patina. The last pipe being the same as the others indicates the gun was originally intended for a wood rammer as opposed to steel. Horn tipped wood ramrod dates to at least the age of the stock if not older. Action is very firm and secure and functions wonderfully. Frizzen smoothly shuts and springs forward. A fantastic 284 year old musket that could tell countless stories if it could talk!
