U.S. Military Model 1880 Hunting Knife Watervliet Arsenal
Description: Serial #4265. This iconic knife measures 13 1/2" overall with an 8 1/2" wide, single-edged blade having unstopped single fullers. The steel has a mostly bright patina with some spots of dark freckling and mild sharpening marks along both sides of the blade. The 17 groove oak handle has light surface wear and handling marks, heaviest along the obverse. The scabbard was originally built at Watervliet Arsenal with leather loop, but was later altered to a brass belt hook, and part of the original Watervliet stamping remains next to the brass rivets attaching the “WATERVLIET/ARSENAL" stamped hook. The brass has an overall dull ochre patina with mild verdigris along the edges, and the leather has aged very well, although there is flaking and heavy crazing along the belt hook tab. This is a very nice example of a popular US military knife, and rates very good plus-near fine condition overall. SOLD Manufacturer: Spfld Model: Hunting Knife |
