British Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Officer's Saber
Description: This is a very handsome, German-made saber that measures 37" overall with a 32 1/4" curved, hatchet-tipped blade with wide single fullers, and bright, fire blued etched panels on both sides of the forte. The blade has a bright patina with specks of darker mottling towards the tip, and the fire blue panels retain most of their original finish and depict the royal coat of arms on the reverse, and the royal cypher on the obverse. The blade maker's name is present along the back edge: “J. Runkel, Solingen". The hilt has the typical stirrup guard with single, forward swept quillon, and dove pommel. The hilt originally had two shield-shaped langets, but one of them was removed long ag, and the grooved ivory grip has a mellow age patina with dark longitudinal cracks present on either side. The leather scabbard has a freckled steel throat, a dark coating of leather preservative, and a freckled brown steel chape. This is a very nice saber and is in very good condition overall.
