REUTHE CAST IRON PERCUSSION ANIMAL TRAP GUN
Description: On the top is hand engraved "Fred Ruethe wild animal Trap 1857". This trap gun has two barrels firing together, one at either side of a tube into which the two-pronged barbed spring is forced back when the trap is set. Bait was fastened to the odd sliding and expanding springs. The springs were pressed back into the tube between the barrels where they would engage the hammer. When the wild animal would seize the bait, pulling it would make the springs slide forward. The hammers would fall discharging the balls and at the same time the springs expand in the animal's mouth. The barbs hold him . This trap could be a prototype as it is in very good condition showing little if any wear and most all blue remaining. Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms. Since 1965 Mr. Merz has taken part in the world of firearms and has been a contributor to many well known reference books.
