U.S. Civil War 1863 Ames Mfg. Co. Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officers Sword & Scabbard
Description: This is a nice example of a U.S. Civil War Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officers Sword manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company. This sword is U.S. stamped and inspected, and dated 1863, making it highly likely it was issued during the Civil War and actually carried into battle. The Model 1840 Non-Officer's Sword was adopted by the U.S. military in 1840 and issued for over 70 years. It was designed as a secondary personal defense weapon during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, and was primarily carried by sergeants. It features a 31" inch long blade with a sharp tip and a blunt cutting edge and a cast brass hilt resembling a wire-wrapped handle. This sword was designed for stabbing rather than slashing like the calvary sabres of the period. As mentioned previously, this sword had a very long service life with the U.S. Military starting as a front line combat weapon and ending as a ceremonial sword carried on special occasions. This example is all-original and comes with the leather scabbard minus the brass throat/frog stud and tip/drag. The ricasso of the blade is stamped on one side with the Ames Mfg. Co. stamp, and the reverse side is stamped with "U.S. A.D.K. 1863". The "A.D.K." is the U.S. military inspector's initials for A.D. King. The brass knuckle bow is also stamped with the inspector's initials for the Ames firm. This sword is in good shape overall with a straight blade with an intact point, and the cast-brass hilt still shows most of the false "wire wrap" detail. The blade retains the vast majority of the original factory polish with only some small spots of corrosion as you can see in the pictures. It is free from cracks or repairs and the sword as a whole has a very attractive patina. The scabbard body that comes with this Model 1840 Ames sword is in good shape with the original stitching still intact. The number "30" on the scabbard is in Whiteout and can be easily removed. The new owner may be able to purchase a lessor sword/scabbard and transplant the missing brass scabbard parts over to this excellent body. This Model 1840 Non-Officers sword would be a great addition to any American Civil War or Military collection. The fact that this Ames made piece is early enough to have seen a couple of years of actual combat service make it particularly attractive. SOLD |
