OHIO Marked CIVIL WAR Antique O.P. DRISSEN Co. BRAZILIAN Light Minie Rifle
Percussion Rifle Manufactured in Liege, Belgium
Description: OHIO Marked CIVIL WAR Antique O.P. DRISSEN Co. BRAZILIAN Light Minie Rifle Percussion Rifle Manufactured in Liege, Belgium Here we present an antique O.P. Drissen & Company Brazilian Light Minie Rifle manufacture circa 1861 in Liege, Belgium. This gun was also known as the “Brazilian Contract Light Minie Rifle” and the “Brazilian Model 1855 Naval Rifle” and imported into New York in 1861 for the American Civil War. This gun is one of the most attractive, well balanced, and accurate of the percussion rifles used during the war. It was a unique combination of the features found on the British Pattern 1856/58/60 series of Enfield Short Rifles and the French Light Minie rifle. It is estimated that the U.S. Government purchased between 4,000 and 6,000 of these rifles. On the Civil War Union purchasing agents records these guns are referred to as “Belgian rifles of Enfield pattern” or “Rifles, Liege, saber bayonet, caliber .577”. The source was the form of C.K. Garrison who had a U.S. Government contract to deliver 5,800 "Minie Rifles of Liege pattern with saber bayonets”. The “Brazilian Light Minie Rifle” was part of a contract destined for the Brazilian military but ended up being sold to the U.S. buyers instead. There are many known Civil War images of troops armed with these rifles. The brass U.S. Eagle wrist shields on the guns are clearly visible in the images and the straight blade saber bayonets are generally shown suspended from the U.S. M-1855 rifleman’s belt. The lock and top of the wrist is marked with the naval anchor logo of the O.P. Drissen Company of Liege, Belgium. There is a brass plaque with an eagle on top of the wrist above “OHIO”. There is no doubt this rifle would have been in the hands of a Union soldier from Ohio, fighting in the American Civil War. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Good bore for its age. This example sports a solid stock and contains an average amount of wear. The rear sight is missing. A nice brown patina has formed on the barrel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32 inches. Caliber: .61 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1800 #228534 SOLD Antique: Yes |
