Antique J.O. Bass Spurs from Tulia Texas. Rare spurs number 1268
Description: Very hard to find classic original pair of antique J.O. Bass spurs. Measure approximately 6 1/2 inches long overall with 3 1/8 shanks, opening for 3 inch rowel, with a 16 points. 2 inch rowels in place now. Marked “NO. 1268 MADE BY J.O. BASS TULIA. TEX.” Great worn-in but strong with no repairs. Authentic favorite of many Texas Rangers, movie stars (including Tom Mix), cowboys, and ranchers. Only in business for 27 years retiring in 1924. Perhaps, the most sought after Texas and American spur makers. Tulia, Texas has it's place in Hollywood history... Back in the early 1900's J.O. made spurs for some of the most famous Tinsel Town cowboys. He had a one-man blacksmith shop in Tulia. Bass made specialized spurs for the movies without ever leaving the Texas Panhandle. Alan Glasscock with the Swisher County Museum says, "what he'd do is have you send him two postcards. One that said left and one that said right. Take two pieces of bailing wire and wrap them around your boot where you wanted to the spur to fit. Cut it to the length you wanted. Tape it to the card and mail it to him and he'd make your spurs off of those two little pieces of wire." Those cowboys paid $7.50 for the spurs back then. Today... They're collectors items and go for as much as $20,000 on eBay. Payment: Item, can be ordered on line with a credit card or paypal on our sight. Just Google (riverjunction) and type in the River Junction Trade Co. item number (6367) in the search box. Before you checkout you will see shipping cost and total.
